EPDs

Communicate  about the environmental performance of your products through our EPD Service.

What are EPDs?

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are standardized documents that provide transparent, comparable and verified information about the environmental performance of a product throughout its life cycle, from raw material extraction through production use and disposal or recycling.

EPD’s are based on the ISO 14025 standard and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. They are used by companies for commercial purposes to inform stakeholders about a product’s environmental impact. Within the construction industry EPDs support greenhouse gas emission reduction as stakeholders can compare different materials to select the most sustainable option.

EPDs must be verified by an independent third party to be published and usually have a validity of 5 years.

Sintali offers a third-party verification service for EPDs to validate your products’ performance.

Why EPDs?

EPDs in construction and manufacturing are not mandatory. However, they are rapidly growing in the market due to increasing environmental awareness and provide many business benefits:

Market demand and procurement: Appeal to public and private sectors, who are increasingly interested in procuring products that have a lower impact on the environment.

Competitive advantage: Differentiate your products and demonstrate your commitment to sustainability.

Boost reputation: Gain marketing advantage by implementing an independent, quantifiable and internationally recognised standard for your sustainability credentials.

Regulatory compliance: As the world moves towards a net zero future, protect your product from regulatory changes that make life cycle assessment mandatory on all products.

Product improvement:  Through a deep assessment of a product’s environmental impact, identify areas to improve the product in the future.

EPDs and Green Building

EPDs play a fundamental role in helping clients achieve green building standards through providing detailed sustainability data needed to meet the environmental requirements of the building

Several green building standards like BREEAM award credits for using products with EPDs. LEED also rewards credits though EPDs related to lifecycle impact reduction.

EPD’s also contribute to achieving the EDGE green building standard. The values from EPDs for construction products can be used directly in the EDGE App to provide a more accurate assessment of the embodied carbon and demonstrate less impactful material choices.
