Tata Realty Infrastructure achieved EDGE Zero Carbon certification for its Ramamujan Intellion Park, marking the first EDGE Zero Carbon certified buildings in India.
EDGE Zero Carbon is the highest level of the EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) program. To reach EDGE Zero Carbon a project must first receive an EDGE Advanced certificate for the asset, which means reaching a minimum of 20 percent savings in water and embodied energy, and a minimum of 40 percent energy savings on-site. The operational energy of the building (based on actual data) must then be covered 100 percent through renewables or carbon offsets.
Ramamujan Intellion Park is located in Chennai within Taramani’s IT corridor, which is a hub to renowned IT Giants. Spanning 25.75 acres, with 751,631m2 certified floorspace, the park has created an office environment that inspires efficiency as well as innovation and wellbeing. The buildings achieved the EDGE Zero Carbon certification by first improving the efficiency of the buildings by just over 40% and then using onsite solar PV along with offsite renewable energy procurement to achieve 100% operational energy savings.
Commenting on this achievement, Mr. Sanjay Dutt, MD & CEO, Tata Realty said, “Tata Realty has always endeavoured to exceed its ESG goals and has placed sustainability on high significance. We adopt global sustainability practices in building development and make all our projects environmentally friendly. As a part of our ESG journey, we are committed to the local community and environment, and therefore as responsible real estate, we will develop green buildings with LEED platinum certification, WELL certification, and IFC EDGE certification. In addition to this, we will have an enhanced focus on renewable energy inclusion in our energy mix. On the social front, we have taken a commitment to touch over one lac lives positively. At Tata Realty, we aim to continue delivering energy-efficient buildings, and this certification is a testimony of our sincere efforts.”
Tata Realty’s marked its achievements at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, participating in the session ‘Disaster and Climate Resilient Infrastructure: To scale up climate adaptation and resilience.’ The event focused on turning climate pledges into climate action in pursuit of net-zero emissions and aligning financial flows with these goals.
“With Tata’s broad scope across India and their influence on the real estate market, the company has the potential to catalyse a significant market transition towards decarbonising the building sector, “said Eleni Polychroniadou, Co-Founder, Sintali. “If we are truly to reach our net zero goals we need action across the entire value chain. Tata Realty is taking these valuable steps towards decarbonisation and the company’s achievements serve as an important example that decarbonisation at scale is possible.”
Tata Realty has been a pioneer of both EDGE and the green building movement for many years. The company has already certified 6 projects against the international green building standard, all of which achieved the EDGE Advanced level, and is under the process of certifying a further 5 projects.
