Shristi Cargo Warehouse Private Limited (Shristi), founded in 2017 in Delhi, India, is a renowned logistics and warehousing company that offers a range of services including warehousing, transportation, and distribution solutions, across India and South Asia. Shristi Warehouse, comprised of over 22,000 square meters, acts as one of the primary logistics hubs for airport cargo, based close to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi.
Shristi warehouse is based on the land owned by GMR at Delhi Aerocity. GMR Group is a leading Indian infrastructure company, engaged in developing projects across Airports, Energy, Transportation and Urban infrastructure and is responsible for managing and operating the Delhi Airport.
The Shristi team was contacted by the GMR team in Hyderabad, who recently certified the GMR Hyderabad Fulfilment Center with EDGE, to discuss the company’s sustainability strategy and align the development to GMR’s existing sustainability commitments. Shristi warehouse already complied with the required governmental safety and building standards, as well as the standards required by larger tenants such as FEDEX, Amazon and DHL. They decided to follow GMR’s example and use the EDGE standard as a benchmark for sustainability.
The results speak for themselves. The warehouse was certified as a new building and achieved an impressive 30% energy savings, 54% water savings and 53% less embodied energy in materials. This means that on average, each year the building will save: 295 MWH of energy, 15,524 m3 of water and 141 tons of CO2.
A number of measures enabled Shristi Warehouse to achieve these savings. To reduce the operational energy of the building, the developer installed and exterior walls, fitted with insulation as well as natural ventilation, high performance glass and efficient interior and exterior lighting. Along with these, the project has Smart Meters for Energy and Power Factor Correction for energy savings. To reduce water consumption, Shristi installed water efficient faucets in bathrooms, efficient water closets and urinals. On the materials side, Shristi used modern construction materials such as aluminium-clad sandwich panels for the roof and exterior walls, as well as a timber stud interior wall with plasterboard insulation. This enabled a substantial reduction in the energy embodied in materials, resulting in a lower carbon footprint and a more sustainable building.
The certification took 9 months from registration to certification. The project was supported by EDGE Experts at leading sustainability advisory firm, EDS Global. Since its inception in 2003, EDS has worked on over 350 green building and energy efficiency projects worldwide. The team has deep expertise in a range of areas including climate change mitigation policies, energy efficient building design, building code development, energy efficiency policy development, energy simulation and green building certification.
The EDGE audit was conducted by Essential India. The Essential India team is in the field of sustainability from 2015 onwards. They have a strong presence in India and in North America. They are working closely with architects, MEP engineers, owners and other stakeholders providing energy efficiency solutions. They collaborate with various stakeholders to create a building design which has less climate impact, reducing carbon footprint and maximizing thermal comfort. They provide services that deal with passive design solutions, lighting solutions, energy auditing, energy assessment, energy modelling & code compliance, green rating compliance, climate and microclimate analysis, renewable energy systems integration and daylight analysis.
Why EDGE?
Shristi was introduced to EDGE because of its relationship with the landowner, GMR. GMR’s environmental requirements and sustainability strategy inspired the company to use a green building certification scheme and validate its environmental credentials. This is a prime example of how each player in the value chain has the potential to drive change.
Shristi was able to garner multiple benefits from pursuing EDGE certification. The free EDGE streamlined the whole process for the team, saving significant time, effort and costs for the company as compared to other globally recognized systems. The quantification of the impact was also an attractive draw for using EDGE. The data pulled from the EDGE App could feed into sustainability reports and ESG reporting. The data on the resource efficiency attained also helped the company articulate the value of the green building measures implemented in a clear way.
Shristi also recognises that certifying projects with EDGE will increase the value of the property and provide a market advantage, opening up the possibility of further investment.
What’s Next?
Following a positive first experience with EDGE certification, Shristi will be reviewing this scheme can be applied to its wider portfolio of assets across the region.
